How To Surprise Yourself This Holiday Season
Praised be Lord, the season to be jolly is just around the corner, and busy girls are getting ready to kick off their stilettos, get into party pants, and paint the town red, green, and gold. What do you mean, your biggest holiday plans involve pajamas, the loving company of your cat, generous servings of cheesecake and tissues, and Bridget Jones and Love Actually reruns? Stop right there! The fact that you haven’t made plans for New Year’s Eve (yet) doesn’t mean you need to wave Goodbye to fun, games, and good cheer. In fact, the empty calendar entry offers lots of opportunities for you to weigh your forces against the ghosts of winter blues and surprise yourself by a first-rate festive experience and perhaps a smart present or two. So, will you spend your holidays sobbing into the pillow or will you throw the perfect party for your favorite person, Her Majesty Yourself?
The Perfect Morning Before
The best way to start a long last day of this year is to indulge all your senses in a relaxing at-home spa. Make yourself a bubble bath, pour a cup of strong coffee or herbal tea, and whip up a delectable morning snack to take with you to the tub and savor fully.
After the deep, invigorating dip, sit in front of the vanity and treat your face to a detailed beauty routine, and follow up on the facial with a nice, long skin lotion soak. If your mood is down in the gutters, you can try scheduling a last-minute appointment with the hairstylist, just to stay on the pretty side of the mirror in the wake of the festive night.
Tie Up Loose Social Ends
With the reflection in the mirror as charming as it can be, it’s time to turn your attention to your emotional needs and tie up loose social ends you’ve been putting off for a better (or less busy) day. Give your relatives a buzz to see how life’s been treating them, and try to endure the family lunch if you’ve been invited to one. Alternately, invite your besties over for lunch and catching up: that way, you’ll all get to spend quality time with people you care about.
As for the lunch menu, try not to order takeout even if you don’t feel up to culinary enterprises; order a meal from a restaurant or check in at a local diner instead. For a neat plot twist, you can make the lunch super-lengthy and merge it with early dinner, as this will provide you and your friends with an excellent opportunity for re-bonding.
Daydreams and Laughter
The afternoon is a time for all the things you always wanted to do but never really had the time for – and by it, I’m not referring to polishing your grandma’s silverware or cleaning out the garage. Now is the moment to cash out all those overdue self-compliments and feelings of pride and joy for all the things you’ve achieved in the year behind, and give yourself the permission to chill out and do literally nothing, for at least one whole afternoon.
Of course, this doesn’t mean you should abandon your shopping tour to the whims of fate: if you still haven’t got round to present purchases by now, it’s still not too late to take care of your gift list (and you should be No. 1 person on it, just for the record).
Gifts That Goes Both Ways
When it comes to nick-of-time gift shopping, you can do it the easy-sleazy way, or the good, old-fashioned way. You can get charming makeup presents for yourself from Jane Iredale: that way, you won’t have to feign surprise when you find the gift in the mailbox a couple of days later.
As for the gifts for your loved ones, you should get those the old-school way – i.e. by doing the shopping on foot, unless you want to get onto Santa’s Naughty and Late list really bad. With the shopping bit sorted, you can put up the final decorations and get back into your PJ – or jump into the party getup and head to the local pub for a drink with your favorite crowd.
A Night to Remember
Whether you decide to spend New Year’s Eve bringing on scrumptious dinner treats and reruns of your favorite TV shows or throwing down an alcoholic gulp after alcoholic gulp, make sure to truly enjoy every minute of that night. It’s okay to feel slightly under the weather, but holiday season is the time to be jolly, not blue and sullen, and Santa won’t reward your gloomy mood with presents, so try not to give in to the winter glum.
And if you feel like misbehaving on the crazy night, make it the type of entertainment that will get your adrenaline racing, send the butterflies in your belly aflutter, or cause you to lose track of time engrossed in an activity you relish. Invite that cute guy from work over for a round of drinks: you only live once, after all, and besides, that 1,500-piece jigsaw puzzle won’t assemble itself.
Are you ready to have yourself a blast and savor every minute of it fully? If your answer is Yes, simply follow the steps listed above and stage the best New Year’s Eve you’ve ever had to end another year in good cheer – but you can also spend the day walking around the place in your pajamas if that’s all you really want to do. Happy New Year, lovely lady.
